I am a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a Bachelor of Arts in Child and Family Development. I received my North Carolina K-6 teaching license from St. Andrews College. This will be my 17th year at McAlpine and my 23nd year teaching. I have taught in various positions through the years including K-2 multi-age, kindergarten literacy, media, first and second grades. I was honored to be selected as McAlpine's Teacher of the Year last year.
As long as I can remember, I have been fascinated with teaching. I decided early on that I wanted to be in a profession where I could impact the lives of children. Teaching brings me great joy and witnessing the progress that students make is a privilege and a pleasure. Allowing for individual differences and creating an environment where each child feels accepted is very important. I want my students to realize that success is a possibility for everyone and that risks can be taken in their learning without the fear of failure. The way and manner in which I treat them carries over into the way they treat each other. The following anonymous quote is a favorite of mine. "Life's battles aren't always won by those who are stronger or faster, but sooner or later, the one who wins is the one who thinks he can."
I was born in Anchorage, Alaska and moved to Laurinburg, North Carolina at the age of 5. I have been a resident of Charlotte for 21 years. I have a son in college and a daughter in 12th grade. I love to read and go kayaking. Visiting the mountains is a favorite pastime of mine.
